Air

Addis Ababa is a major hub for travellers arriving into Africa with Ethiopian Airlines. This is Africa's largest airline and flies with very modern aircraft, has a large network across the continent and within Ethiopia. So reaching many of the main toursit destinations of Ethiopia is best done by scheduled flights.

The Situation in Ethiopia

Currently there is a developing civil war situation in Ethiopia which is very complex, and has caused a tremendous amount of misery for many Ethiopians who have got caught up in this. Primarily the unstable areas are in the Tigray and Amhara areas in the North of this vast country. At this time flights are still moving smoothly through Addis Ababa and the troubles have not effected that, but it is worth just updating yourself with current information before considering this as a destination and we hope for a speedy solution to this situation.

Visa and Entry Requirements

Ethiopia is a country that requires a yellow fever certficate for entry which must be done at least one month prior to travel. For a Visa you can either purchase a toursit Visa at the border on entry or you can do it using their EVisa system on line.

COVID

In order to control the spread of COVID-19, Effective July 18,2020 the Ethiopian Government has decided to quarantine all arriving passengers entering Ethiopia for 7 days at the expense of the passengers, except travelers who can bring certificate of negative PCR SAR-CoV test done up to 5 days before arrival to Ethiopia. All travelers arriving at Bole International airport who can bring a certificate of negative PCR SAR-CoV test done up to 5 days before arrival to Ethiopia, will be required mandatory 14-day self-quarantine at home after giving sample upon arrival. All travelers with NO certificate of negative PCR SAR-CoV test done up to 5 days before arrival to Ethiopia as well as returnees will be quarantined at selected hotels including the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel for 7 days at passenger’s own expense or will be placed at different quarantine centers for 7 days. After 7 days, travelers will be tested and then self-isolated for an additional 7 days at home. Diplomats will be quarantined at their respective Embassies and are required to give swab upon arrival. Passengers who have a certificate of Negative PCR SAR-CoV test are required to bring a printed copy of the result Rapid diagnostic test (RDT antibody test) certificate is not acceptable. The above quarantine requirement does not apply for transit passengers.

Rail Travel

Ethiopia is developing its rail network to cover many parts of the country and to link it with the Ports in Kenya. Currently they have just completed their new rail link with their major trading port in Djibouti.

Self Drive - Overland Safaris

It is possible to self drive around Ethiopia however we reccomend that you do this with a known operator in Ethiopia that have their own drivers. Some of the journeys are very long here and the roads can be quite chaotic which will require some local knowledge to navigate.
